In a normal eye, the cornea and lens are spherical, allowing light to focus clearly on the retina. However, in an eye with astigmatism, the cornea or lens is shaped more like a football, with one meridian (or axis) being more curved than the others. This irregular curvature prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina.<\/p>\n
Symptoms of astigmatism may include:<\/p>\n
1. Blurry or distorted vision
\n2. Eye strain or fatigue
\n3. Headaches
\n4. Difficulty driving at night
\n5. Squinting to see clearly<\/p>\n
Astigmatism can occur alone or with other vision conditions, such as nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia).<\/p>\n
Types of astigmatism:<\/p>\n
1. Corneal astigmatism: caused by an irregularly shaped cornea
\n2. Lenticular astigmatism: caused by an irregularly shaped lens
\n3. Irregular astigmatism: caused by an irregular cornea or lens, often resulting from injury or surgery<\/p>\n
Treatment options for astigmatism include:<\/p>\n
1. Glasses or contact lenses
\n2. Refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, etc.)
\n3. Toric lenses (specialized contact lenses)
\n4. Corneal reshaping (orthokeratology)<\/p>\n
