Glaucoma<\/a>\u00a0is a condition that damages your\u00a0eye<\/a>‘s optic nerve. It gets worse over time. It’s often linked to a buildup of pressure inside your\u00a0eye<\/a>.\u00a0Glaucoma<\/a>\u00a0tends to run in families. You usually don\u2019t get it until later in life.<\/p>\n

The increased pressure in your eye, called intraocular pressure, can damage your optic nerve, which sends images to your\u00a0brain<\/a>. If the damage worsens, glaucoma can cause permanent\u00a0vision loss<\/a>\u00a0or even total blindness within a few years.<\/p>\n

Most people with glaucoma have no early symptoms or pain. Visit your eye doctor regularly so they can diagnose and treat glaucoma before you have long-term vision loss.<\/p>\n

If you lose vision, it can\u2019t be brought back. But lowering eye pressure can help you keep the sight you have. Most people with glaucoma who follow their treatment plan and have regular\u00a0eye exams<\/a>\u00a0are able to keep their vision.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Glaucoma Causes<\/h2>\n

The fluid inside your eye, called aqueous humor, usually flows out of your eye through a mesh-like channel. If this channel gets blocked, the liquid builds up.\u00a0Sometimes, experts don\u2019t know what causes this blockage. But it can be inherited, meaning it\u2019s passed from parents to children.<\/p>\n

Less-common causes of glaucoma include a blunt or chemical injury to your eye, severe eye infection, blocked\u00a0blood<\/a>\u00a0vessels inside your eye, and inflammatory conditions. It\u2019s rare, but eye surgery to correct another condition can sometimes bring it on. It usually affects both\u00a0eyes<\/a>, but it may be worse in one than the other.<\/p>\n<\/section>\n

Glaucoma Risk Factors<\/h2>\n

It mostly affects adults over 40, but young adults, children, and even infants can have it. African Americans tend to get it more often, when they’re younger, and with more\u00a0vision loss<\/a>.<\/p>\n

You\u2019re more likely to get it if you:<\/p>\n
