Contact lenses fall into two main material categories—soft contact lenses and rigid gas-permeable lenses—along with several specialized designs based on your vision needs.
Soft Contact Lenses
Soft lenses are thin, flexible, and made of water-attracting plastics called hydrogels or silicone hydrogels. They let oxygen pass through to the cornea and offer easy adaptation and high comfort.
Daily disposables: You wear a fresh pair once and throw them away at night.
Bi-weekly or monthly: You clean, disinfect, and reuse these lenses before throwing them out on a schedule.
Toric lenses: These correct astigmatism (irregularly shaped corneas) by staying steady on the eye.
Multifocal lenses: These feature different zones to help you see objects close up and far away.
Rigid Gas-Permeable (RGP) Lenses
RGP lenses are firm and stiff, but they still let oxygen reach your eye. They are durable, resist deposit buildup, and provide very sharp vision, though they require an adjustment period.
Standard GP lenses: They last a year or two and correct various vision problems.
Scleral lenses: These larger rigid lenses cover the white part of the eye (sclera) to treat severe corneal irregularities.
Specialty and Other Lenses
Hybrid lenses: These combine a rigid center for sharp vision with a soft outer ring for extra comfort.
Ortho-K (Orthokeratology): You wear these special hard lenses only while sleeping to gently reshape your cornea for clear daytime vision without glasses or contacts.
Cosmetic lenses: These feature decorative colors or designs and still require a proper prescription from an eye doctor.
