Astigmatism is a common vision condition caused by an irregular shape of the cornea or lens inside the eye. It results in blurred or distorted vision at all distances, near and far.

In a normal eye, the cornea and lens are spherical, allowing light to focus clearly on the retina. However, in an eye with astigmatism, the cornea or lens is shaped more like a football, with one meridian (or axis) being more curved than the others. This irregular curvature prevents light from focusing correctly on the retina.

Symptoms of astigmatism may include:

1. Blurry or distorted vision
2. Eye strain or fatigue
3. Headaches
4. Difficulty driving at night
5. Squinting to see clearly

Astigmatism can occur alone or with other vision conditions, such as nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia).

Types of astigmatism:

1. Corneal astigmatism: caused by an irregularly shaped cornea
2. Lenticular astigmatism: caused by an irregularly shaped lens
3. Irregular astigmatism: caused by an irregular cornea or lens, often resulting from injury or surgery

Treatment options for astigmatism include:

1. Glasses or contact lenses
2. Refractive surgery (LASIK, PRK, etc.)
3. Toric lenses (specialized contact lenses)
4. Corneal reshaping (orthokeratology)
